Seeing my work outdoors as a part of the environment brings an inner sense of balance and serenity. These are things I have always found as a result of looking at art. Whether it’s hanging on a museum wall, in a garden, or public art on the street, these are the things that have inspired me over the years.

My wife and I made it a priority to bring our boys to see and notice art. In NYC, the Hudson Valley, Paris, or Italy, there is beauty everywhere. As a Hudson Valley artist, I am deeply grateful for the privilege to see and experience the creations of other artists.

Toasting

For years I have worked in NYC commercial construction. Because of my experiences building NYC, I developed a powerful relationship with iron and steel. I’ve come to realize that all building materials have unique qualities to offer the arts. Every piece, every project, has a process that reveals itself. It is my job to be open to it. Make the time and space. Pause when necessary. Let one thing recede and another rise up. Everything is in balance with another.

Our Lenny Harrington sculpture is one of the most treasured items in our art collection.
We have a cube within a cube in green. We find that the piece is simple and yet profound and beautiful in it’s simplicity. It blends into and yet sets off the natural beauty around it

The minimalist design fits into our art collection beautifully alongside artists such as Sol Lewitt, Elsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Richard Serra and Donald Judd. It is the first thing we see when we look out the window in the morning and before we go to bed at night. It brings us great joy.

Wonder Wall

Our sculpture may be titled “Wonder Wall.”  But we call it “The Lenny” and we love it.

When you first look at the sculpture, it appears to be a simple combination of yellow, blue and red. Then you walk around it , the sun bounces off it in different ways at different times of day, under various weather conditions, and the colors change. Yellow turns to glistening gold.  Red become a beautiful orange. Blue turns into vibrant purple. At other times and from other angles, it reminds us of Mondrian.

Because the sculpture is made of steel and glistens the way it does, it inspires us to reflect on our home. We live in a stone home built in the 1920s.  One is old, sturdy and solid as a rock. The other is tall and colorful, translucent and modern. We love our Lenny Harrington sculpture so much we are fantasizing about the next “Lenny” and how it might roll along the property. Maybe we’ll call it “Lenny II”
